The Power of Employee Retention in Business Success

🤔Why offer big benefits as a small business? Employee retention. Whether you’re offering a service or developing proprietary tech, it pays to treat your people well.

In 2021 Anita Kurl approached me to create a benefits package for their salon employees. Typically, salons work on a commission model or in some cases stylists have to rent a space in the salon to offer services and earn their comp. This is not usually an employee-friendly compensation model and turnover is common.

Anita Kurl did it differently and offered full-time employment, disability, medical and dental benefits for employees. It’s not cheap to offer these benefits but they had their eyes on the potential return on investment.

Let’s unpack the HR strategy here:

🌟Anita Kurl has a reputation for highly specialized expertise and trains every employee to meet the highest standards.
💸Losing those trained employees would cost a lot of money and risk their reputation.

🚫Most salons don’t offer benefits or regular employment to stylists.
🤝Recruiting top talent is easier when you have competitive pay and benefits.

🫶Talented employees make the business a success.
✨Treating people right drives employee retention and customer happiness overall.

This example is both unique and universal. While it’s rare for a hair salon to offer competitive pay and benefits, small businesses can compete and win in the marketplace with the right HR strategies and programs.

In an industry where a few bad Google reviews can quickly tank your business, it’s critical to recruit and retain top talent. Anita Kurl understood the value of employee retention for the overall health of the business and doubled down on employee happiness to achieve their goals.
